Here are a few background slides from discussion i'll be leading today at TiECon 2009 on Consumer Web Platforms & Customer Acquisition. The slides are a little rough, as i pulled the info from some rather old blog posts on platforms, but hopefully still useful for the conversation. Apologies for any oversights / omissions, i'm sure there are many.
- Facebook: World Domination Ahead (Jun 07)
- You Down with OPP? = Other People's Platforms? (Feb 07)
- Web 3.0 isn't the Semantic Web, it's Hailstorm 2.0 (Mar 2008)
- Memo to Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, & AOL: How to turn 500M email & IM users into Facebook Platform... & a Crapload of Revenue (May 2008)
- Successful Platforms Have 3 Things: Features, Users, Money (Nov 08)
My money is on the "Rebel Alliance". They've been leading the fight so far.
And with payments, a mobile platform, and real time search, they'll be stepping into Google's turf.

Slide #3: I'd add "social loop." Eg: write a comment in blog post, forum or other messaging medium and check back later to see if anyone's commented back.
