i think it makes sense to split email into two: house list and external lists/ partner marketing. And putting viral under low effort/high impact is slightly misleading because if your product isn't designed that way, you'll have a hard time getting any viral.

thanks christian... i probably agree with your assessments there.
1) re: email "external list / partner marketing" is a source of traffic & could be a channel / campaign. separately, a "house list" is probably a channel for retention.
2) "viral" as a channel does likely involve quite a bit of product planning & resource investment... so product investment may be more like "medium", however the *marketing* resource allocation is relatively low. still, point taken.
