Turning off the email auto-responder.
Well, i tried it for a month or so.
Some folks liked it, thought it was helpful or funny. I was hoping it would provide a way to know where i was, and maybe a few useful links for startups that contact me.
Others thought it was obnoxious, either because they thought i was being pretentious, and/or because they kept getting it every time they emailed me -- guess Google/Gmail isn't very adept at sending it only once per person / only once a week.
in any case, at least until i resolve the issue with frequency per person, i'm turning it off.
for those of you who had a negative reaction to my experiment, my apologies.

Google has IMAP support which means it should be pretty simple to write up a script to only send an auto-response under certain conditions... only 1 auto-response a week, only to people who are not already in your contacts list, etc. I've got a lot of PHP code for accessing / sending email through Gmail if you're interested.

for those who didn't email you, can you tell us what the auto-responder said? do you have an example?
