Former FC founder & Schadenfreude-lover Phil Kaplan (aka 'Pud') becomes that which he used to enjoy pillorying -- that is, founder of a venture-backed Internet startup (AdBrite).
it seems Mr. Kaplan has decided his experience making money from ads on FC was a good stepping stone to getting an AdWords competitor off the ground.
Phil talks about what it's like to get down and wallow in the mud with the rest of us delusional entrepreneurs...
yeah, c'mon Phil. I know you've got a bunch of that Sequoia money strewn around your office somewhere, and when no one's looking you get bare-ass nekkid and go roll around in the stinky green stuff, don't you?
you dog. you dirty, dirty dog.
too bad i didn't make it down to SXSW this year... looks like Phil, Jason Calacanis, and a few other folks i know are speaking on a panel about making money with online ads.
then again, i've got my hands full going down to E-tech to geek out with Tim O'Reilly and Rael and folks, not to mention our new site launching next week.
stay tuned...

I've read the articles on Pud the past few days, good press for him. I've also watched his various companies the past few years. IMHO, there is a consistent lag in development fixes/features in his products/services. Taking a look at FC, you see a completely unregulated stream of posts on everything from insightful comments, to the more common political, cut-n-paste messages. A simple rating system would prevent all the junk on that site and make it worth visiting again. I've also used AdBrite. It simply lacks a ton of features that Google's AdSense provides. I turned out a text based ad system in less than a day that has all the features his system does without much effort. If he wants to compete with a content-based system like AdSense, he will have to develop an indexing bot and deliver relevant ads. I like Phil and have seen him speak several times, I wish him the best, but I leveraging his popularity into a successful .com business is going to be easier said than done.
